Summary

Wintec’s Bachelor of Communication is for those who want to work in media, journalism, public relations, corporate communication, content creation, advertising and marketing.

This degree is for the creative person with a flair for writing, or working with images, or ideas (or all three). With that talent it is difficult to look past a career in the communications industry for diversity, challenge, and creative stimulation.

What You'll Learn

The Bachelor of Communication is co-delivered with other degrees from the creative suite of programmes. You'll gain depth within your own discipline as well as breadth across other creative disciplines.

Industry experts are integrated into the delivery of the craft modules and engagement is made explicit through professional practice / placement specific modules.

In Year One you'll be introduced to professional practice and different types of practices and businesses; in Year Two you'll gain advanced knowledge and practical experience in a work environment, and in Year Three you'll be put into a placement.

The degree is heavily project based to provide you with real-world authentic learning. In the craft modules you'll be scheduled to work on cross discipline vertically aligned projects four times a year in years one and two, and twice in year three. There are two endorsement areas available: Creative Media and Digital Marketing.

What is Creative Media?

The creative media pathway includes writing and content production for all print, broadcast and digital journalism platforms, corporate communications, public relations and advertising. It incorporates visual media skills in moving image, photography and digital publishing.

As well as sound communication skills, our graduates will understand how to gather, analyse and present data, shoot and edit video and manage web and social media platforms.

What is Digital Marketing?

This pathway includes writing and content production for media and marketing, advertising and communications, including developing creative content, understanding strategy, planning and implementation. It incorporates skills in moving image, photography and digital platforms.

Graduates of this programme will have developed a range of transferable skills and professional attributes that will position them well to be responsive to, and to work collaboratively and creatively within the increasingly complex and dynamic creative industries.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Communication are positioned to pathway into postgraduate programmes at Wintec such as the Bachelor of Media Arts with Honours.

Graduates of this programme will be qualified to work in a range of communication, media and creative related roles.

Graduate of this programme are also capable of transferring and applying their skills across a number of non-communication disciplines.

Entry criteria

Candidates are required to have:
NCEA Level 3 comprised of 60 credits at NCEA Level 3 or above and 20 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above, including:

• 14 credits each at NCEA Level 3 in three approved subjects, including a Language Rich subject; and
• Literacy (10 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above made up of 5 credits each in reading and writing); and
• Numeracy (10 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above); or

A relevant level 4 qualification; or equivalent.

In exceptional cases, candidates with 60 credits at NCEA Level 2 across four subjects including 12 credits in a Language Rich subject, or equivalent, will be considered.

English Language Requirements

• International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.0 with no individual band score lower than 5.5; or, equivalent
• TOEFL IBT 60, TOEFL PBT score of 550 or Pearson score of 50.
