What is it Like?

This qualification provides further education for a variety of people, who have already completed a degree, to add an additional subject area to their learning.

Planning your programme

You need to select courses to the value of 120 credits at 200, 300 or 400-level from the wide range of courses for the Bachelor of Design (Hons). You can design your own course of study choosing from courses in fields as diverse as fashion, industrial design, photography, and spatial design with the approval of the Programme Leaders.

Courses for the Graduate Diploma in Design have the following prefixes:

Some courses may have limitations on numbers and some have prerequisites, i.e. courses that must be passed prior to study at the next level. Thus you could be required to complete a 100-level course in addition to the courses that will count towards the diploma. Depending upon your previous study or experience, you may be granted an exemption from prerequisite courses on application to the relevant Programme Leader. If you are planning to use the Graduate Diploma as preparation for postgraduate study in design, you should consult design staff before you enrol.

Graduate Diploma in Design structure

The Graduate Diploma in Design consists of advanced degree-level courses worth a total of 120 credits. It must include courses to the value of at least 75 credits at 300-level or above.

Students can seldom achieve the full number of courses required within one calendar year and are recommended to undertake this qualification over at least two years. The Graduate Diploma in Design may be awarded with or without an endorsement. The qualification may be endorsed with one of the following: Fashion Design, Industrial Design, Photography, Spatial Design, Textile Design, or Visual Communication Design, subject to successful completion of at least 75 credits in courses from the relevant discipline.

Entry criteria

The Graduate Diploma in Design is open to holders of a Bachelor’s degree. Applicants who do not have a degree may apply to be admitted with equivalent status on the basis of practical, professional of scholarly experience, for example, an appropriate diploma plus work experience or substantial relevant professional experience. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of work to demonstrate they are at the standard necessary to undertake work at 200 level 300-level (second third year) and beyond.

English language requirements:

• IELTS score of 6.0 (no band less than 5.5)
• TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall (min 19 in Writing)
• PTE Academic score of 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills)
• Cambridge English score of 170
