    Summary

    Do you have a passion for everything on wheels and want to work in the automotive industry? This is the programme to get your career started in automotive engineering.

    Programme overview

    Build your foundational knowledge and learn how to service general automotive systems to be able to work within commercial work environments.

    As a graduate of this programme you will be able to:

    • Comply with workplace policies, procedures and relevant regulations to work safely and effectively in an automotive workshop
    • Select and use tools and equipment for the completion of basic workshop engineering tasks
    • Apply fundamental knowledge of automotive engineering systems to the maintenance of engine and driveline systems
    • Assess the operation and perform minor repairs on vehicle electrical and electronic control systems
    • Apply fundamental knowledge of automotive engineering systems to maintenance of steering, suspension and braking systems

    Qualification and what's next

    Once you’ve successfully completed this programme you can go into work as a trainee or apprentice and complete the New Zealand Certificate in Light Automotive Engineering Level 4 or the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering Level 4. You can also choose to continue study in the related programme Bachelor of Applied Technology in the Transport Management or Automotive Engineering pathways.

    • Certificate in Applied Technology (Automotive Engineering) (L4)
    • Certificate in Applied Technology (Autotronics) (L4)
    • National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Engineering) (L3)
    • National Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Automotive Electrical Engineering) (L3)

    Entry criteria

    For this programme, you will need the following:

    Achieved New Zealand Certificate in Educational Achievement (Level 1) in Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science.

    English Language requirements:

    • NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University entrance
    • NZCEL (Level 3) with endorsement of either General or Workplace or Academic
    • IELTS score of 5.5 with no band score of 5
    • TOEFL (pBT) Paper-based test score of 500 (essay 4.0 TWE)
    • TOEFL (iBT) Internet-based test score of 36 (writing 14)
    • FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill. OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
    • Pearson Test of English (PToE) Academic with a score of 36 with no score lower than 36
